Build Trust and Connection

If you're looking to build Trust and connection, try Connecting Conversations. This is a structured, yet flexible tool designed to foster meaningful dialogue within NHS teams. It uses a set of conversation cards to help individuals and groups to explore what matters most to them, to build trust, and surface ideas for productivity improvement. It’s powerful because it rapidly creates space for people to feel heard, understood, and empowered.

When to use it

Frontline leaders have told us we need connecting conversations more than ever in today’s fast-moving NHS for three reasons:

  1. The pressure to deliver means our conversations can become transactional, focussed on tasks rather than people. We stop asking deeper questions like “why are we doing this?” or “is there a better way?”

  2. We work within a hierarchical system. This can make it hard for people to speak up, or to feel they have the agency to challenge, question or suggest improvements - even when they see these opportunities every day.

  3. As leaders progress in their careers, they can unintentionally become more distant from the realities of frontline work. This disconnect risks eroding trust, understanding, and the shared purpose that drives great care.

Connecting Conversations are a way to change that. They create space for human dialogue — not just operational updates. They help teams pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most. And they give everyone a voice, regardless of role or band. Use Connecting Conversations when you want to:

  • Identify practical productivity improvement areas that matter to individuals and teams.

  • Build trust and rapport, especially during times of change or challenge.

  • Create momentum by surfacing and addressing difficult issues in a safe way.

  • Strengthen psychological safety and reduce power gradients [link to sub tab] within teams.

How it works

There are four main ways to have a connecting conversation. First download the Connecting Conversation cards, then click on an option below, which shows how you can implement them in different settings.

Paired conversations. A gentle introduction ideal for one-on-one reflection and connection.
